Jacobs was stabbed by three men who were armed with knives. According to the victim’s brother, Graham Jacobs, at around 8 pm, the assailants kicked open the door of her farmhouse and attacked her with a knife.

“They wounded her on the head and part of the knife broke off and stabbed in her skull. They then tied her up with an electric cable and forced her to make an e-wallet payment. They then threatened to rape and kill her if she did not give them the pin number, which she did,” explained Jacobs.

After they received the money she managed to escape. She then ran to her neighbour who called an ambulance and the police.

“She was taken to Pelonomi Hospital at around 11 pm, and was there until around 7 am this morning without receiving any assistance. We then decided to take her to Mediclinic where they managed to assist her immediately. The hospital removed the metal bit of the knife stuck in her skull quickly and she did not require extensive surgery,” he added.

Mimie Jacobs, who received the Free State Female Farmer of the Year Award from the Free State Department of Agriculture in 2016, is also currently the president of the Free State Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

While speaking to Bloemfontein Courant, Jacobs added that the victim was doing well regardless of the incident and that they now had the traumatic task of cleaning her home which was drenched in blood from the attack.

Police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo said that the suspects are still at large. “Any person with information or enquiries concerning the case is requested to call Sergeant Monaheng Johannes Masiu at Soutpan Detective Branch,” said Mbambo. –

The couple was admitted to Life Rosepark Hospital in Bloemfontein on Monday morning for observation.

Willie Lombard, Free State Agriculture’s security representative in the area, says police are following numerous clues and have already obtained good information.

A farmer, Ronnie Brand (68), from Oranjeville in the Free State, who was attacked early on Monday morning, 5 August 2019, is the latest victim in the war that is being waged against our country’s farmers by merciless criminals. The attackers, who fled with the farmer’s Isuzu bakkie, were injured and one was killed when the vehicle overturned.

Rural safety must be a priority for the government. It is not enough to take action after an attack as then it is usually too late. Proper preventative measures must be implemented to stop or thwart such attacks.

The legal system must ensure that farm attackers are removed from society and stricter bail conditions must be set for those who are charged with serious and violent crimes, like farm attacks and murders.

Border control where farms border on Lesotho in the Eastern Free State is also of the utmost importance.

The farmers in these areas are under threat. It is unacceptable that the South African citizens who ensure the sustainability of the country’s food provision by day must fight for their lives on their own farms by night.

A mere 36 000 commercial farmers have to provide food for nearly 58 million people under extremely dangerous circumstances. The time has come for the government to bring real solutions to the table to stop these attacks on our country’s farmers.
