An elderly farmer from Ottosdal in North West is in a steady state in a hospital in Klerksdorp after being attacked in his home on Boschpoort outside the town on Saturday morning.
Three attackers awaited Hannes Pretorius (79) in one of the bedrooms of the house after he was fielded to see if everything was in order with his cattle, his wife, Lida Pretorius, 67, said. The Pretorius farmer with cattle. Lida keeps a school in town.
She went to town for a church function early on Saturday morning and came home with her husband’s door home a few hours later. Lida said they were very safety conscious and it was strange to her that Hannes did not open the door when she returned home.
Lida finally heard Hannes from inside the house say he was attacked and tied up. She drove away from the house and called the neighbours and police.
Hannes was assaulted with various objects, including a golf club, while the attackers demanded cash from him. “They spent everything in search of money. They even plucked the drawers and threw them on their heads, ”said Lida.
With everything they could get hold of, they beat him.
“However, there was no cash in the house. The attackers eventually found the vault’s key, including three firearms in it.
Lida said police were quick on the scene and several units, including the police’s forensic investigator, had identified the farm for clues. The attackers presumably fled from the house on foot and climbed further into a vehicle and disappeared. They are gone with the weapons, a television set and a pick-up key. However, the vehicle itself was not stolen.
It also seems as if the attackers hid outside the house for a while before they hit.
Hannes is still being treated at the Life Anncron hospital in Klerksdorp. “It is going well with him in the circumstances. He has three small fractures in his face and the doctors have to decide if they will operate, ”said Lida.
Lida said Hannes also heard how one of the attackers shot one of the couple’s dogs, Fafa. He was named after the Married with rugby character, Fafa Beltrami. Hannes closed Fafa on the stoep when he left the field. The dog probably wanted to protect his boss, after which the robbers shot him dead.
“He was a dear, dear dog and very much about my husband,” said Lida. According to Lida, they will not pick up after the incident. “Our pastor was here and he also says it’s not that the Lord allowed the incident, but he definitely saved [Hannes].
“That he is still alive is a miracle. My husband is very strong, ”said Lida.
Capt. Police spokesperson Sam Tselanyane said no one was arrested in connection with the incident.
A case of house robbery is being investigated.
