Police in the Free State has arrested five suspects for last week’s gruesome farm murder in the Boshof district.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Lynda Steyn says the suspects aged between 30 and 40 were arrested in Bloemfontein and Dealesville respectively.

The 67-year-old Isak (Sakkie) van den Berg and his 61-year-old wife Ina were tied up and brutally beaten before they were shot dead.

Steyn says van den Berg left his farmhouse on Friday afternoon to take a worker back to town, upon his return he stopped his vehicle to open the farm gate when he was overpowered by six men.

The suspects took him back to his house where he was tied up alongside his wife.

Police says after the murder they ransacked the house and allegedly stole four firearms.

Steyn says during the arrests they recovered two firearms which would now be sent for forensic tests to determine the ownership and whether or not it was used in any other crimes.

van Den Berg’s vehicle was found abandoned at the Caledon River bed en route to Lesotho.

The men will appear in the Boshof Districts court on Thursday on several charges including murder.
