Around 200 residents from the neighboring community set fire to homesteads and equipment this afternoon

Violence broke out on a farm near Mtubatuba this (Sunday) afternoon when angry community members stormed the property and set fire to homesteads and equipment.

A tenant at the farm said that at around noon, about 200 angry residents from the surrounding community stormed onto the farm in what is believed to have been a revenge attack.

‘The farm owner found a group of people fishing illegally in the river yesterday and chased them away as it was on private property,’ the tenant said.

‘As they fled, a young boy jumped into the river and drowned. As revenge, the group arrived at the farm and burnt down almost everything, including four homesteads, workshops, and the tractors. We were forced to flee.’

The man said the occupants of the farmhouse were trapped in their homes until the police arrived.

There have been no reports of injury.
